Micro Springs: Tiny Components, Big Impact

Micro springs support the miniaturization of products across industries, from surgical tools to robotics to electronics. Comparatively, these small springs have the same abilities and applications as any other spring but on a much smaller scale.

Micro Spring Industries

  • Medical Device
  • Aerospace & Defense
  • Electronics
  • Electric Motors

Applications

Micro springs are vital components in various applications, including but not limited to the following:

  • Medical Devices. Surgical staplers, robotics, and hearing aids.
  • Aerospace & Defense. Specifically, compact devices that perform reliably under extreme conditions.
  • Electronics. Push buttons, keyboards, and miniaturized electrical controls.
  • Electric Motors. Allowing electric motors to run efficiently without arcing or other gaps in power.

At John Evans’ Sons, we can produce micro springs as thin as 0.002” with tight tolerances. Our engineering team provides comprehensive support to help customers develop the perfect small spring for their application.

Materials

The main types of materials we use to manufacture micro springs are stainless steel, phosphor bronze, and other materials as needed. Our team offers material selection assistance to ensure you choose the right material for your specific project. We help you evaluate factors like load requirements, environment, and required longevity. Additionally, we accommodate finishings based on project requirements.

Our Custom Micro Spring Manufacturing Capabilities

Producing miniature springs requires highly skilled technicians and specialized equipment, both of which are found at John Evans’ Sons. The process of getting micro springs for your device begins with an initial consultation, where we aim to understand your specific application and how the spring will function within it. Then we evaluate the design, creating and testing prototypes until a final design is approved. From there, we move into full production.

Types of Micro Springs and Their Benefits

Constant Force Springs

Constant force springs provide a constant load in either retracting or extending direction and a smooth range of motion. The constant force spring design does not need to overcome inertia and can produce a counterbalancing effect. Moreover, these springs are compact and can easily be mounted onto existing hardware. Thus, constant force springs can eliminate the need for complex, expensive motors, thereby reducing device cost and size.

Spiral Torsion Springs

Generally used in applications requiring less than 360 degrees of rotation, spiral torsion springs obtain high levels of torque with little rotation. When properly processed, this type of spring enables rotation in both directions and the capability to “return to center”. Therefore, a spiral torsion spring is perfect when you need a spring that can mount easily to existing designs.

Wire Forms

Wire forms are fabricated from wire coils or straight wire to fulfill certain industrial applications. The team at John Evans’ Sons has the experience in design, tooling, and material selection to produce reliable, long-lasting wire forms in the necessary size and shape and with the properties your project requires.

Flat Springs/Stampings

Custom flat springs ranging in shape and size are most commonly used in medical applications. Flat springs store energy when compressed by a weighted object. When the weight is removed, the spring releases the energy. To create high-quality, uniform flat springs, we manufacture them with our cutting-edge, in-house stamping process.

Helical Springs

Helical springs manage torque, tensile, and compressive forces in many medical applications, such as diagnostic devices. John Evans’ Sons fabricates torsion, extension, and compression helical springs to fit your specific medical application.

Motor Brush Springs

Motor brush springs allow electric motors to run efficiently without arcing or other gaps in power. Over time, the brushes wear out due to friction as the commutator turns. Motor brush springs maintain proper contact force against the commutator.

Why Choose John Evans’ Sons for Custom Micro Springs

Micro springs are tiny but mighty components in many of the world’s most important devices.

John Evans’ Sons has been manufacturing high-quality standard and custom springs since 1850. We take pride in developing unique or difficult spring products—like micro springs—as well as high-volume production runs of precision springs. All our products are manufactured in our advanced 65,000-square-foot facility in Lansdale, PA. John Evans’ is ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485:2016, and AS9100D certified to manufacture high-quality springs for the medical device, aerospace, and other critical industries.
